Pirates Grab Their 19th Straight Losing Season With Loss To St. Louis

The Pittsburgh Pirates have clinched their 19th consecutive losing a record for a major league franchise in North America. The Pirates looked like 2011 would be different for them as on July 20 the Pirates were 51-44 and led the NL Central by a half-game. Since that time though the Pirates have gone 16-38 since, and at 67-82 are ensured of another sub.-500 record.

Pirates fans deserve better, but another losing season will go into the books for them. I really thought this would be the year they broke the string, but it will not happen this year. Clint Hurdle had them playing well for awhile, but it is the Pirates and apparently losing continues to be a tradition with them.

Mariano Rivera Notches His 600th Save

No matter what anyone tells you 600 saves is a big milestone even if Mariano Rivera does not want to admit to it. Not many people in baseball history can claim 600 saves. In fact, only Rivera and Trevor Hoffman can actually make that claim. Rivera has been a model of consistency for the Yankees and he will tie Hoffman's record of 601 probably the next time he pitches. Rivera is a lock for the Hall Of Fame and may go down as the best reliever ever in the game of baseball.

Texas Longhorns Make A Change At Quarterback

It seems the love affair with Garrett Gilbert was short lived as he is now on the bench while Case McCoy Colt McCoy's younger brother and David Ash will handle the quarterback duties for the Longhorns. Gilbert threw two interceptions against BYU and was booed by the home crowd. Gilbert had a decent season last year, but it seems for now he will be on the bench for the Texas Longhorns. Another change is Freshman Malcolm Brown is listed as the starting tailback after leading Texas in rushing the first two games.

Mack Brown is a guy who wants to keep his job and he knows that unless Texas gets wins and move up the rankings he could be looking for a new job. Longhorn fans want results and if Brown cannot get them they will bring someone else in. Case McCoy and David Ash are young, but Brown is hoping they can get the job done for the Longhorns. If not this could be Mack Brown's last year as Texas Longhorn coach.

Michael Jordan Gets 100,000 Fine For Sharing His Opinion

Michael Jordan has learned as a owner you have to follow certain rules even if your name is Michael Jordan. The NBA fined Michael Jordan $100,000 for public comments he made last month about the lockout and one of the league's players, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. I really think this is stupid, but it's the NBA and rules are rules I guess.

In an Aug. 19 interview with The Herald Sun, a newspaper in Australia, the Charlotte Bobcats owner spoke extensively about the need for revenue sharing and mentioned Milwaukee Bucks' Australian center Andrew Bogut. I think Jordan has learned his lesson and while their is a lockout look for him to keep quiet on any NBA subject. He can afford the 100,000, but I am sure he is not happy about it.

What We Learned About The Phillies And Brewers This Weekend

The Milwaukee Brewers have one of the best home records in baseball and this past weekend they welcomed the Philadelphia Phillies to Miller Park. Philadelphia has been the most consistent baseball team this season and they proved it again this weekend. The Phillies went in and took three out of four from the Milwaukee Brewers. In fact, the Brewers got lucky they did not get swept by the Phillies.

What did we learn from this series? Both teams have good starting pitching, but Philadelphia is just a little bit better. Milwaukee has some good hitters, but the Phillies hitters performed in the clutch the Brewers did not. Both teams are talented, but over time the Phillies have proven they can beat anyone almost anywhere. The Milwaukee Brewers are still a team trying to learn how to do that. It looks right now the Phillies are still the best until someone proves different. This past weekend the Brewers found out just how good the Phillies are.

Tony Romo Has Another Cowboy Meltdown In Loss To Jets

Tony Romo can look like the next coming of Roger Staubach, but at times he can also have meltdowns that cost the Dallas Cowboys games. Last night, he had another one of his meltdowns as the Dallas Cowboys lost to the New York Jets by a score of 27-24. It looked like the Cowboys and Romo were going to start the season out right, but Romo fumbled and threw an interception in the final seconds to seal the Cowboys fate.

Throughout his career Tony Romo has made it a habit of costing his team games. Last night, his teammates came to his defense, but how much longer can they do that when he is costing them games. It would be okay if Romo had led the Cowboys to a Super Bowl, but he has not. Everyone knows in the league that Romo buckles under pressure and against good teams it always seems to happen. There is going to come a time when Jerry Jones is going to have to rethink his decision about Romo being the guy to lead the Cowboys. If losses keep piling up like this changes may need to be made.

Could Brian Kelly Be In Hot Seat Already?

Brian Kelly is finding out that life at Notre Dame can be awful tough. Last night at Michigan, the Fighting Irish looked like they would get their first win of the season. The problem was Brian Kelly's Irish only played three quarters and not four. Michigan had a great fourth quarter and shocked Notre Dame by a score of 35-31. It now puts Notre Dame at 0-2 and Michigan State up next.

For the Irish and Brian Kelly it is back to the drawing board. Yes, the Irish can move the ball and score points, but unless you play some defense, they will never beat anyone. You cannot try to have a shootout with teams week after week. Kelly will start to really feel the pressure if Notre Dame goes 0-3. Kelly left Cincinnati because he wanted a high profile job and Notre Dame was it.

It is much tougher to get those wins when you play tough teams week after week. Toss in everyone wants to beat Notre Dame and Brian Kelly has a tough uphill climb. Kelly is finding out why no coach since Lou Holtz has been able to make Notre Dame a consistent winner. It is tough, and it can break you very quickly. It will be interesting to see how Notre Dame does against Michigan State a game they must win.
